To Number my Days Aright
Psalm 90:12
By Pastor Bill
Moses challenged himself to learn from God how to number his days aright, so that he would be able to gain a heart of wisdom.
Someone has said that the best way to count your days is not by how many days you've lived, but by how many days you have left. Now, obviously this is a challenge, since no one knows exactly how many days we have left to live. Life, after all, is short and no one knows whether or not we will live to exceed the average life span.
An interesting book, entitled 1000 Marbles, tells the story of a man who in his mid 50's realized that if he lived an average life-span, he would have about 1000 Saturdays left to live. So he bought 1000 marbles, put them in a glass bowl and each Saturday he takes one out and throws it away. This reminds him weekly how long he has to live and challenges him to make the most of every week, every day.
Confronting how long you can reasonably be expected to live can help you gain a deeper understanding of the meaning and value of life. It can also challenge you to live out your life's purpose. To that end I am posting here the approximate time left for me on this earth, assuming I live to be 77.8 years old, which is the current average lifespan for residents of the U.S.
